Bordeaux Region
Château de l'Hospital is located in the small town of Portets, about 15 miles south of Bordeaux in the Graves appellation. In 1780, the château was constructed for Jacques de l'Hospital, one of the King's advisors. So, contrary to popular belief, the Château takes its name from a person rather than an actual hospital.
The château was classified as a historic monument in 1973, during which time it belonged to the Lacaussade family. Recently it became one of the Châteaus owned by the Lafragette family, who also own Château Loudenne in the Médoc and Château de Rouillac in Pessac-Léognan.
The vineyards of Château de l'Hospital cover almost 30 acres (80% for reds, 20% for whites); the terroir consists of large and small pieces of gravel and chalk and limestone soil.
