French Wine - Savoie Region |
Bugey is a small region located about midway between Lyon, France and Geneva, Switzerland. The vineyards are located in the Ain département and occupy two areas on the lower slopes of the Jura mountains. The region has not yet achieved appellation status, and is listed as a VDQS wine growing region (Vin Délimité de Qualité Superiéure).

Savoie lies in the foothills of the Alps, mostly between Lake Geneva and Chambéry. From Lyon to Chambéry, it is about an hour and a half drive on the autoroute. Savoie has a long history of producing wine (documentation of grape plantings date to the 11th century).

Mondeuse is the red grape of Savoie, as Pinot Noir is to Burgundy or Syrah is to the Northern Rhône. Although many locals claim that Mondeuse is related to Syrah, it appears to be a relative of Gros Syrah, rather than Syrah.

Apremont lies on the other side of the valley facing Chignin, tucked within the foothills of Mount Granier. As one looks at the looming stone mass above its vineyards, a crescent-shaped curve distinguishes the line of the rock, as if a piece had been taken away.
